My Favourite Song on Every Lady Gaga Album (Pt. 1)

If you asked a random stranger on the street who ran the pop music industry in the first half of the last decade, I guarantee that they would say Lady Gaga. With hits including “Bad Romance” and “Born This Way,” the pop star has released many iconic songs and is indisputably one of the best and most influential artists of our generation. In this two-part series, I’ll be sharing my favourite songs on all of Gaga’s six fantastic albums.

The Fame: “Paparazzi”

Gaga started her music career back in 2009 with her debut album The Fame. While the album wasn’t necessarily critically acclaimed and some tracks felt like fillers, the album has several standouts that fans still listen to today. “Paparazzi” discusses the battle between fame and love, as Gaga sings “We are the crowd / We're coming out / Got my flash on, it's true / Need that picture of you, it's so magical / We'd be so fantastical” in the first verse. The lyrics combined with the unique production make “Paparazzi” my favourite song on The Fame.

Runner-ups: “Beautiful Dirty Rich” and “LoveGame”

The Fame Monster: “Monster”

The Fame Monster is the B-side to Gaga’s debut album and it did not disappoint. It is so good that it is even considered one of Gaga’s best pieces of work to date. While many might choose "Bad Romance" or "Speechless" as their favourite, my go-to on the album is “Monster.” Gaga discusses her “fear of the sex monster” on the song over dark electronic production. The catchy melodies and vulnerable lyrics make for an indisputably amazing song that still sounds fresh today.

Runner-ups: “Bad Romance” and “Speechless”

Born This Way: “Marry the Night”

Born This Way is one of Gaga's most successful albums to date that was released in 2013. Not only was the album was insanely successful commercially but it also solidified her spot in the music industry. The album contains hits “Born This Way” and “The Edge of Glory” and one of my all-time favourite Gaga songs, “Marry the Night.” Opening the album is no easy feat but “Marry The Night” perfectly sets the tone for the entire album. The fun dance track seems to be about partying at the surface level but is actually about Gaga’s insecurities. She sings “I'm gonna marry the dark / Gonna make love to the stark / I'm a soldier to my own emptiness / I'm a winner” in the introduction to the song. Overall, “Marry the Night” checks all the boxes and is a song that will continue to be listened to for a very long time.

Runner-ups: “Hair” and “Government Hooker”

Come back next Sunday to find out my favourite songs on ARTPOP, Joanne and Chromatica!
