Happy Pride Month everybody! Or at least, the end of Pride Month. In honour of the month, I’ve decided to write an article on six LGBT artists that you should add to your playlist as soon as you’re done reading this! Now, I know that there are tons of amazing and iconic LGBT artists out there, so I’m sorry if I didn’t include your favourite. Let's begin!
Kim Petras
Kim Petras is a transgender electropop artist. She recently released her latest single “Malibu” on May 7, 2020. The song is upbeat and is reminiscent of “Don’t Start Now” by Dua Lipa and “Say So” by Doja Cat with its funky bassline and disco feel. Last year, she released her Halloween-inspired album TURN OFF THE LIGHTS on the day of the holiday and Clarity earlier that year. Check out the "Malibu" music video - At Home Edition and Kim Petras on Spotify and Apple Music.
Victoria Monet
Victoria Monet is a Pop and R&B artist and songwriter who came out as bisexual in November 2018. You might know her as one of the “7 ring members” or the writer behind many of Ariana Grande’s hits such as “7 rings” and “thank u, next.” She released four EPs between 2014 and 2018 and is finally releasing her debut album Jaguar on July 31, 2020. She also released her new song “Experience” last week. Check out "Experience" featuring Khalid and SG Lewis and Victoria Monet on Spotify and Apple Music.
Troye Sivan
Troye Sivan is a pop artist who came out as gay via a video on YouTube in 2013. He has released two albums, Blue Neighbourhood (2015) and Bloom (2018). He has also collaborated with Charli XCX (“1999” and “2099”), Ariana Grande (“Dance to This”), Lauv (“i’m so tired…”) and others. Recently, Sivan released his new single “Take Yourself Home” during quarantine, which hopefully means that a new album is on the way! Check out Troye Sivan on Spotify and Apple Music.
Haley Kiyoko
Haley Kiyoko is a lesbian pop artist who has been dubbed “Lesbian Jesus” by her fans. This year, she released her EP I’m Too Sensitive For This Sh*t, which features the single “I Wish.” She also released the album Expectations in 2018 and a collaboration with singer MAX in May 2020 called “Missed Calls.” You may also recognize her from the Disney movie Lemonade Mouth! Check out Haley Kiyoko on Spotify and Apple Music.
Sam Smith
Sam Smith is a pop artist who came out as non-binary in September 2019. You probably know them from their massive hits “Stay With Me” and “I’m Not the Only One.” Smith recently released a few singles, such as “I’m Ready” with Demi Lovato, “To Die For” and “How Do You Sleep?” They were originally supposed to release their third album this May but postponed it due to COVID-19. Check out Sam Smith on Spotify and Apple Music.
RuPaul and the cast of RuPaul’s Drag Race/RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars
If you’re celebrating Pride Month, you probably know who RuPaul is! Ru is a successful drag queen who is the host of the competition reality show RuPaul’s Drag Race and its spin-off All Stars. Not only has Ru has released many iconic songs of her own, including “Covergirl” and “Sissy That Walk,” but the finalists on Drag Race release “rumixes” of Ru’s latest songs with their own original verses. Check out RuPaul on Spotify and Apple Music and catch RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 5 on VH1 every Friday at 8/7 c.
